What is generative engine optimization?

Generative engine optimization is the practice of making accurate public information easy for AI-assisted search and answer systems to discover, retrieve, understand, and attribute.

Start with the retrieval problem

An answer system needs to locate a crawlable page, identify the entity being discussed, extract a passage that directly addresses the question, and retain enough context to represent the claim accurately. Pages that hide key facts behind login, omit source links, or use vague promotional language create friction at every step.

GEO and SEO reinforce each other

Technical SEO supplies canonical URLs, internal links, indexability, performance, and structured meaning. Editorial quality supplies original experience and trustworthy facts. GEO emphasizes concise answers, explicit entities, comparisons, citations, and passages that remain understandable outside the full page.

  • Answer the question near the top
  • Name products and concepts consistently
  • Link claims to primary source pages
  • Use headings and lists only when they clarify meaning
  • State limitations instead of manufacturing certainty

What not to do

Mass-producing interchangeable pages, repeating keywords, adding unsupported statistics, or creating schema that does not match visible content can damage trust. GEO is not a shortcut around helpful-content and spam policies.

How to measure progress

Track crawl and index coverage first, then search impressions, clicks, landing-page engagement, conversions, branded demand, and verified referral traffic. Citation monitoring can provide context, but it should not replace business and search evidence.
